How does Swapfiets compare to a lease scheme?

Both get your employees on a bike. The differences are contract length, repairs, and what happens when someone leaves.

What this means for you?

  • Monthly, not 36 months. No buyout and nothing to settle when someone leaves. You cancel with 30 days' notice, or their subscription moves into their own name.

  • Repairs included, uncapped. A bike needing 12 repairs in a year gets 12 repairs. Nothing extra to budget for, no excess.

  • Nobody gets stuck. New starters, people on fixed-term contracts, anyone who isn't sure how much they'll cycle: they can all join without a 3-year commitment behind them.

What a lease scheme does that we don't

Your employees end up owning the bike, and they choose it themselves from a catalogue, so they can pick a specific brand and model. If someone has their heart set on a particular bike, a lease can give them that.

With us, they choose from our 4 models, the bike stays ours, and they ride it for as long as they're subscribed. If your team is stable and everyone wants to own a specific bike after 3 years, a lease does that and we don't.

On price

Swapfiets monthly rate is often lower than a 3-year lease. Salary exchange applies to both, so that isn't the difference. What separates them is everything a lease adds on top: a buyout price at the end, and a cap on repairs along the way, so anything above the cap comes out of someone's pocket. Neither applies with us. Repairs are uncapped and there's nothing to settle when the subscription ends.

Already have a lease scheme?

You can run both. Some companies keep a lease for people who want to own a bike and add Swapfiets for everyone else, so you don't have to replace anything or move anyone across. Your employees pick one scheme at a time.

What about tax?

In most countries a lease scheme and a subscription are treated the same way for tax and salary conversion, so it rarely tips the decision either way. Your costs and tax page has the detail for your country.
