# What to do if you are involved in an accident
## Oh no! We are so sorry to hear about your accident. First and foremost, we hope you are okay! We know how unsettling an accident can be, so we are here to support you every step of the way.
### Steps to take right after an accident
- **Check your safety first:** Make sure you are in a safe location and seek medical attention if needed.
- **Exchange details (if another party was involved):** Note down the name, phone number, address, and insurance details of any third party involved. Take photos of the scene and any bike damage if possible.
### How to get a working bike again
Once you feel ready to ride again:
- Plan a bike exchange directly via the [Swapfiets app](https://help.swapfiets.com/download-the-app?hsLang=en) or [contact us.](https://help.swapfiets.com/contact?hsLang=en)
- We will book an appointment for you to bring your bike to a store/location, so we can assess the damage, repair or exchange it, and provide you with a safe, fully functional bike.
### How damage costs and third-party reports work
- **Damage evaluation:** Surcharges for damage will only be added after a swapper evaluates the bike during the return or exchange. Possible extra costs are only charged if excessive or non-standard damage has occurred. - **Third-party claims:** If another person caused the accident, securing their full contact details allows us to complete an official accident report. This helps transfer any potential damage costs to the responsible third party or their insurance provider.
