What to do if your bike is lost or stolen

Has your Swapfiets gone missing? Don't panic—we're here to help you get back on the road. Learn how to check your local municipality bicycle depot, how to report your bike missing in the app, and what happens to your subscription if your ride is lost or stolen.

Step 1: Check your local bicycle depot

Sometimes, local authorities remove incorrectly parked bikes and take them to a bicycle depot.

  • If you collect it yourself: Contact your local municipality to locate your bike. You will need to pay their surcharge directly at the depot to get it back.
  • If we collect it for you: We will email you if we find your bike at a depot. You can pick it up from a Swapfiets store for an extra fee, which we will simply deduct from your next monthly invoice.

City-specific rules for Amsterdam and Utrecht

  • Amsterdam: If you are in Amsterdam, please read our guide on Amsterdam parking and depot surcharges. In Amsterdam you can’t pick up the bike from the depot yourself.
  • Utrecht: If you are in Utrecht, read our Utrecht bicycle depot guide for specific local rules.

Step 2: Report your bike missing in the app

If your bike is truly lost or stolen, log into your app immediately to report it missing by selecting ‘I need help’ followed by ‘my bike is lost/stolen’. Read our guide on lost bike surcharges to see how these costs are calculated.

Cancelling your subscription after a lost bike

If you choose to cancel your subscription after your bike goes missing, please keep the following in mind:

  • Notice period: You are still required to fulfill your standard one-month notice period.
  • Return the key: You must hand in your bike key to us to avoid extra lost-bike fees.
  • Loyal subscriptions: If you have a Loyal subscription, it cannot be ended earlier than your committed contract end date.
